Formed in 1979, Xerox Girls developed their sound under the influence of Sheffield bands like Cabaret Voltiare and They Must Be Russians.

Xerox Girls formed in 1979 after witnessing other Sheffield bands like Cabaret Voltiare, They Must Be Russians and The Stunt Kites.

In the golden age of D.I.Y they built their equipment list from Musical Sounds and various other second hand shops. Cheap synths, crap amps, Acetone drum machines and a Revox tape deck, their set up pretty much remains the same today. Like many bands at the time they played their first gig at The Hallamshire Hotel, attended by just 19 people, unlike The Sex Pistols, Throbbing Gristle and U2, thousands haven’t claimed to have seen them or even heard of them.

Their tracks have been archived away for years but for a chance meeting they may have never seen the light of day. Mastered and mixed down by The Black Dog, we are pleased to present Xerox Girls first EP: “Rammle”.

Feedback and Quotes
“The ‘X-Girls’ were the steel city’s greatest secret … Tape release heroes ? They fucking invented tape!” – Regis

“I’ve just been wading through all my promos, slowly becoming anaesthetised to the love of life and music, and then i get this. you lovely fuckers! Just what I needed.” – Oliver Ho

“Wicked release, right up my street. Loving them all but ‘Erase Me’ is the one!!” – Sigha

“Awesome. Loving Erase Me & Level Five Car Park Dreams… great EP all round.” – Shifted

“Great stuff, messed up and gritty.” – Perc

This is the Fifth of The Black Dog's Liber series, following on from the well received Liber Kult, Liber Temple and Liber Nox 12"s.

This is the Fifth of The Black Dog’s Liber series of releases that are purely aimed at the dance floor. It follows the previous, well received Liber Kult, Liber Temple & Liber Nox 12″s and the album Liber Dogma.

The Black Dog explain:“We’re not sure if this release is an end chapter to our Liber series or just the start, that’s the beautiful thing about music and art. The Liber 12″s were always aimed at the dance floor so it wasn’t difficult for us to select who we wanted for the remixes. Anyone who follows us on Twitter will know that we regularly talk about the artists and releases that are lighting up our kennel, getting played in both the studio and DJ sets.

We’ve been following Sandwell District from day one and always enjoyed the “spectacle” of what they do, which is much needed in techno these days. Blawan is a fellow SoYo artist who’s impressed us no end with every release. If Burial made music to dance to it would sound just like Blawan. We love everything he’s done and he doesn’t disappoint with his re-interpretation of Black Chamber Order. Sigha first caught our attention with a release on Hotflush in 2009. The clinical coldness immediately struck a chord with us and a later release on Blueprint just confirmed that we needed to get him involved.

Some of our favourite releases and remixes recently have been from Shifted – it’s hard to resist the dark hypnotic threads that he weaves and his own album is one that we’re really looking forward to. Then there’s Richard H Kirk – An absolute legend. He’s still producing some of the best electronic music out there and we’re constantly reminded that we still have a lot to learn. We have nothing but total respect for him. To round off Liber Chaos we really wanted the minimal industrial style of Perc. He makes great use of space with just the right amount of Klonk. He’s also a brilliant DJ.”

The Black Dog's latest album shifts expertly between biting, sensual electro, plangent electronics and throbbing Dark Wave Techno.

The Black Dog are a legendary live act whose ability to destroy venues and wreck soundsystems is undeniable. They blur the boundaries between DJing and performance while possessing an excellent sense of where to take the crowd. Live, they represent purist techno, which is also utterly crowd pleasing.

On record, tBd are famous for delivering subtlety, emotion, and intellectual richness, as well as great tunes, but never in their career have they managed to convey the sheer visceral impact of their performances as on Liber Dogma. This album contrasts with last year’s extremely well-received ambient outings on Music For Real Airports and the Dadavistic Orkestra collaboration with members of the Psychick Warriors of Gaia. While none of the band’s artistry and care has been lost, there is now a greater focus on a pure, and utterly exhilarating, vision of how techno can transform the dancefloor into a realm of complete pleasure.

Presented in their classic seamless journey, Liber Dogma shifts expertly between biting, sensual electro (Death Ov The Black Sun), plangent electronics (Dark Wave Creeping, Eden 353, Feeder Rub Out), and also wave after wave of throbbing Dark Wave Techno. There is real continuity with the simply awesome funky techno of the accompanying singles on their own Dust Science label – together these releases comprise a mix-friendly triptych of the finest electronics currently available. Tracks such as Black Maria, Bird Siren, Single Light Focus and Silent Escape represent a renaissance in smart but hugely entertaining techno that offers a refreshing and eagerly anticipated alternative to anaemic synth washes or testosterone-crushed distortion. Liber Dogma is a satisfying and hugely enjoyable journey into sound.

The Black Dog -
“This album is about surrendering to hypnotic, physical music played loud in big, dark rooms. We always wanted to make an album that reflects the kind of set we play live, and that’s what we’ve done with Liber Dogma. It’s all about red lights, a smoke machine, a single strobe, a Funktion One soundsystem… and The Black Dog. We’ve played all over the world and we’ve brought that vibe back to our lab. Forget the fancy lighting, the indoor scarves, the hair do’s and the hair don’ts; fuck all of that. Music is about losing yourself and having a good time with friends and that’s what this album will help you do.”

Limited edition 3 x 12″, 180g Blue Vinyl. 353 Units Only

Also available on CD and digital downloads from Soma Records.

The third of The Black Dog's Liber series, following the previous, well received Liber Kult & Liber Temple 12"s.

This is the third of The Black Dog’s Liber series of releases that are purely aimed at the dance floor. It follows the previous, well received Liber Kult & Liber Temple 12″s; these singles all lead to Liber Dogma, due on Soma in October, and further Chapters.

High Rise Choir Reprise opens with clattering percussion taken straight from recordings at Forgemasters before a face-ripping gut-wrenching bassline cuts through with one of The Black Dog’s strongest minimal grooves yet. Built to move heads and feet, the hypnotic groove hooks you instantly while the haunting strings bring the emotion in massive dark waves; you can’t help but fall into this track. Beautifully simple, addictive and massive.

Dissident Bleep is just that. Over the years the myth that Sheffield is all about Bleep and Bass has gathered ground but those who live here know it’s all about the bass. Industrial repetition gives way to twisted vocal samples of “Over, Over”, a sure-fire nod to Cabaret Voltaire, before the kicks and filters pummel you.

This is the second 12" of The Black Dog's Liber series, that are all purely aimed at the dancefloor.

This is the second of The Black Dog’s Liber series of releases that are purely aimed at the dancefloor. It follows the previous, well received Liber Kult 12″; these singles, together with the forthcoming Liber Dogma album on Soma, complement their recent ambient output on Music For Real Airports and their collaboration with three former members of The Psychick Warriors of Gaia as the Dadavistic Orchestra.

Heavy Industry continues the driving funky techno style established on Bass Mantra, but with even more hard industrial edge. The kicks were made from drop forges, while the hi-hats are sampled from the grinding wheels that can be heard emanating from the many “little mesters” steel works that are still to be found in Sheffield. This track hammers home The Black Dog’s ideas about Dark Wave Techno. It is haunting, yet driving, and as hypnotic as hell, slowly building up layers of sound until the dancefloor is fully enveloped. If techno ever had ambitions to build a temple of sound, then Heavy Industry fulfils them.

Greedy Gutter Guru ups the funk quotient considerably. Built round a slowly evolving high pitched squelch, it oscillates round your speakers while metallic tones chime in sympathy, hidden just underneath the main sound. It’s quite beautiful.

We are very proud to present the first 12″ of 2011 from The Black Dog, Liber Kult (1 Ov 3).

We are very proud to present the first 12″ of 2011 from The Black Dog, Liber Kult (1 Ov 3).

This being the first in their Liber series of releases that are purely aimed at the dancefloor. These singles aim to complement their recent ambient output on Music For Real Airports and their collaboration with 3 former members of The Psychick Warriors of Gaia as the Dadavistic Orchestra.

Black Chamber Order is driving techno track with a refreshing modern edge to it in the form of some seriously heavy, heavy bass. Built from layers of electronic riffs, it’s super heavy, but not too in your face, not too aggressive. It’s an absolutely massive sub-bass techno roller that will melt faces and the cones off the biggest system, and it’s just pure heaven to listen to, even if we do say so ourselves!

Bass Mantra is the funkiest Black Dog tune yet, it’s made from nothing more than an evil little plinking sound, a minimal beat, and a seriously fucked bass rhythm. The bass is something else – it’s got layers of intense, acidic hyperwobble that have an effect that is utterly hypnotic. This music was made for dark rooms, smoke machines, strobes and massive systems.

Pressed on 180gram Blue Vinyl. Limited to 300 units. First 100 in a hand numbered sleeve.
Pre-Mastered By tBd.
Mastered & Cut By Simon Francis.

The six track album of beatless but very high impact electronics. Each track weighs in at 11 minutes and provides evolving, warm, and affecting analogue deepness.

Dust Science is proud to present the second release from Dadavistic Orchestra, a collaboration between The Black Dog and 3 former members of fellow electronic pioneers the Psychick Warriors of Gaia.

Dadavistic Orchestra’s first release, Dokument .01, showcased the two groups’ love for dadaism and all that it inspired. Dokument .02 continues with this theme. Where the first release was a double a-side of ambient electronic drone, Dokument .02 is a six track album of beatless but very high impact electronics. Each track weighs in at around 11 minutes of evolving, warm, and affecting analogue deepness. Endlessly fascinating and continuously stimulating, these pieces are long, and yet highly economical. Every element is necessary and there is not an ounce of fat, yet many tonnes of weight.

Deep Old Mu opens the album with a perfect evolving drone that dissolves into tiny melodic figures and sweeps after four minutes, before dropping into some very strange, but highly pleasurable, alien spaces. Petrichore crystallises gamelan tones within an amber-like synthetic backdrop. Teh Meh, Teh Meh brings the coldness, as an endless extended scraping noise is shaped into multifaceted harmony. A sweeter sound emerges in Unconcerned, But Not Indifferent, which offers single simple melodic figure which is delicately reworked into enchantment. De Kunst: Star Dot Star is the albums total Heart of Darkness, transporting the listener deep upriver. De Neerstorting Van De Mening Van De Kathderaal closes the album by focusing almost entirely on the drone, only adding other identifiable layers half way through, before succombing to pure bass weight. Together, this is one of the most affecting and integrated collections of ambient music released to date. It is also one which is fully deserving of replay on the largest, heaviest soundsystem available.
