The artist that best represents the evolution of Detroit techno must be Sean Deason. He's been involved in the scene since early on but is famous as the brightest star in the firmament of the Third Wave of Detroit, delivering legendary DJ sets and twelves for over a decade.
The man has real pedigree and is widely respected as being one of the good guys of techno. He didn't get famous until the nineties, but he was deeply embedded in Detroit electronic culture from early on. In fact his initiation into the dark arts of electronic music was performed by crucial artists such as Richie Hawtin, Kenny Larkin and Dan Bell, for whom he was an early ally. There can be few more compelling marks of quality for techno artists than having a relationship with Plus 8 Records, and Deason can claim to involvement from the label's early days.
He has since released great 3 AM tunes on Generator Records and Distance but more importantly, in 1993 he formed his own Matrix Records, which has put out a long series of blinding techno records, from Deason himself as well as Claude Young and Morgan Geist. Now a mature artist with mastery over the dancefloor as well as the imagination to occupy you when you’re not in a club, his latest album "Allegory & Metaphor" was album of the year for many.
Deason is a techno visionary but he's canny enough to have developed a sideline doing music for video games, television, film, and multimedia. Smart move – his burgeoning career in media production has meant he's been able to stay true to his techno principles. Dust Science is now the beneficiary of that stand and we welcome him to the fold.
